How Accurate Are Calorie Burn Estimates?

MET values are population averages applied to an individual. Why the number is a ballpark, and why eating it back rarely works.

Exercise calorie figures are among the most confidently displayed and least precise numbers in fitness — on watches, machines, and calculators alike, including ours. Here is what drives the uncertainty.

MET values are averages

The MET method multiplies an activity's published intensity by your weight and duration. Those published values come from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities and represent population averages — the typical cost of an activity across many people at a typical effort.

You are not the average, and your effort on any given day is not the typical effort. Both gaps feed straight into the result.

What the formula cannot see

  • Effort within a category. "Cycling (moderate, 12–14 mph)" spans a wide range of real-world intensity. Two people both selecting it may be doing quite different work.
  • Fitness level. Trained people are often more economical at a given task — better technique, less wasted motion — which can mean burning less than an untrained person for the same activity.
  • Body composition. Weight enters the formula; whether that weight is muscle or fat does not, though it affects energy expenditure.
  • Terrain, weather, and technique. Hills, wind, heat, and skill all move the real figure.

Notice that these are structural limits, not errors. A three-input formula is doing well to land in the right region.

Why "eating back" calories rarely works

The common failure mode: finish a session, see 500 kcal, eat 500 extra calories, and wonder why nothing changes.

Two problems stack. First, the estimate may overstate your actual burn. Second — and more often overlooked — some of that energy would have been spent anyway; you were not in a coma for the hour you were exercising, so the additional burn is less than the total figure implies.

The practical approach is to set your calorie target from your TDEE with an activity multiplier that already accounts for your usual training, and leave it there. Adding exercise calories on top of a TDEE that includes them is double-counting.

Use burn estimates to compare activities, not to earn food. The number is a ballpark, and the ballpark is generous.

What about watches and machines?

Wearables and cardio machines use their own models, often incorporating heart rate, and their figures frequently differ from a MET calculation — sometimes substantially. Neither is authoritative.

We do not publish a ranking of which device is most accurate, because we do not have a citable source for such a comparison and inventing one would be exactly the kind of confident-sounding claim this site avoids. Treat all of them as estimates in the same rough family.

Using the number well

  • Compare, don't count. The estimate is much better at telling you rope skipping costs more than yoga than at telling you today's exact total.
  • Track trends. Consistent conditions make the estimate a usable relative measure over time.
  • Let the scale arbitrate. As with TDEE, a few weeks of real weight data beats any prediction.
  • Don't chase precision. A figure of 343 kcal is not accurate to the kilocalorie, and treating it as such invites false conclusions.

The bottom line

Calorie burn estimates apply population-average intensities to an individual, and they cannot see effort, fitness, or composition.
