How the Fertile Window Is Estimated

Ovulation is estimated by counting back 14 days from your next period. Where the fertile window comes from, and what it assumes.

A fertile window estimate works backward from your next expected period rather than forward from your last one. This guide explains why, and what the calculation assumes.

Counting back, not forward

The key insight is that the luteal phase — the stretch between ovulation and your next period — is relatively consistent at around 14 days, while the phase before ovulation varies much more between people and cycles.

So ovulation is estimated as:

ovulation ≈ (last period start + cycle length) − 14 days

For a 28-day cycle starting 1 January 2026:

1 January + 28 days = 29 January (next period)
29 January − 14 days = 15 January (estimated ovulation)

Why the window is six days, not one

Conception is possible across several days, not only on the day of ovulation, because of how long the cells involved survive:

  • Sperm can survive roughly 5 days in the reproductive tract.
  • An egg remains viable for roughly 1 day after release.

Combining those gives a window running from about five days before ovulation to one day after:

Fertile window = ovulation − 5 days  to  ovulation + 1 day

For our example, ovulation on 15 January gives a window of 10–16 January 2026.

This is why intercourse in the days before ovulation can result in conception — the sperm are already present when the egg is released.

What it assumes

Two assumptions carry most of the uncertainty:

  1. A consistent cycle length. The calculation projects your next period from the length you enter. If your cycles vary, the projection moves and so does everything downstream.
  2. A 14-day luteal phase. This is a good average. Individual luteal phases vary, and yours may not be 14 days.

Neither assumption is unreasonable — they are the standard clinical estimate — but both are averages applied to an individual.

Cycle length changes everything

Because ovulation is counted back from the next period, a different cycle length shifts the whole window:

Same starting date, and the windows barely overlap. Entering your actual average cycle length matters more than any other input — see what if your cycles are irregular.

This is an estimate based on averages, not a prediction of what your body will do. Ovulation timing varies substantially between people and between cycles for the same person.

Not a contraceptive method

To be explicit, because it matters: this calculator must not be used to avoid pregnancy. The estimate is too imprecise for that purpose, ovulation can occur outside the predicted window, and cycles vary unpredictably.
