Understanding FFMI
FFMI measures muscularity relative to height, unlike BMI. Where the "natural limit" of 25 comes from, and why it's often over-read.

Fat-Free Mass Index does what BMI cannot: it measures how much lean mass you carry relative to your height. For anyone training for muscle, it is a considerably more informative number.
How it's calculated
Three steps:
FFM(kg) = weight × (1 − body fat% / 100)
FFMI = FFM / height(m)²
Adjusted = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height(m))
The first two mirror BMI's structure, substituting fat-free mass for total weight. The third step is a height normalisation that makes figures comparable across different heights.
For an 80 kg man at 180 cm with 15% body fat:
FFM = 80 × 0.85 = 68 kg
FFMI = 68 / 1.80² = 68 / 3.24 = 21.0
Adjusted = 21.0 + 6.1 × (1.8 − 1.8) = 21.0
At 180 cm the adjustment is zero by construction. For a shorter person — 68 kg at 170 cm, 15% fat — FFMI is 20.0 and the adjusted figure is 20.6. Our FFMI Calculator does all three steps.
Where "25 is the natural limit" comes from
You will see it stated widely that an FFMI of 25 is the natural ceiling for men. The source is real: Kouri, Pope, Katz and Oliva's 1995 paper in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, comparing users and non-users of anabolic steroids, reported a normalised FFMI of roughly 25 as an approximate drug-free ceiling in men.
Two things are worth keeping straight about that figure. It is approximate, and it describes the upper end of a studied population rather than a physical law. And it is specific to men — women's typical values are lower, and the 25 figure does not transfer.
It is one study's observation, widely repeated. Treat it as a rough reference point, not a verdict on anyone's training history.
Error compounds here
FFMI has a structural weakness worth understanding: it is only as accurate as its body-fat input, and that input is itself an estimate.
If your body fat comes from the Body Fat Calculator, it carries roughly ±3–4% uncertainty against a DEXA scan. That uncertainty flows straight into fat-free mass and then into FFMI. An error in one estimate becomes an error in the next.
This is why we label FFMI moderate confidence despite the arithmetic being exact — and why it is far better for tracking over time with a consistent body-fat method than as a precise one-off figure.
Not a health score
FFMI is a descriptive measure of muscularity, not a validated health-risk indicator. There is no evidence base saying a particular FFMI is healthy or unhealthy in the way BMI bands relate to population health outcomes.
Treat it as a training metric. For health context, BMI and waist-to-height ratio have the outcome evidence that FFMI does not.
The bottom line
FFMI measures lean mass relative to height, with a height adjustment for comparability. The often-quoted natural ceiling of 25 comes from a 1995 study of men and is approximate.
