Why Water Needs Vary So Much
A body-weight formula can't see sweat, heat, or what you ate. What actually moves your fluid requirement, and better signals to use.

A water calculator takes one input — your body weight — and returns a daily figure. Real fluid needs move with several things that input cannot capture, which is why this is our lowest-confidence nutrition tool.
What actually moves the number
Activity. Sweat losses during exercise vary enormously with intensity, duration, and individual sweat rate. Two people doing the same session can lose very different amounts.
Climate. Heat and humidity increase losses substantially. The same person needs meaningfully more fluid on a hot day than a cool one, with no change in what they are doing.
Diet. Food contributes a real share of total water intake — fruit and vegetables especially. Salt intake and total food volume also affect fluid balance. Someone eating a lot of high-water foods needs less from drinks than the same person eating dry, processed foods.
Health status. Illness, fever, vomiting, and various medical conditions and medications all change requirements, sometimes considerably.
None of these appear in 35 ml × weight. The formula is a reasonable central estimate for an average adult in ordinary conditions, and ordinary conditions are doing a lot of work in that sentence.
Why there's no better formula
You might expect a more sophisticated equation to fix this — one taking activity and climate as inputs. The honest answer is that no single validated personal formula for water needs exists.
Unlike BMI or the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, there is no widely accepted, validated model that personalises hydration from a few inputs. The clinical 30–35 ml/kg approximation is a working heuristic, not a validated predictor.

Better signals than a number
For most healthy adults, your body offers more relevant information than any calculation:
- Thirst. A well-functioning signal in ordinary circumstances. Drinking to thirst works.
- Urine colour. Pale yellow is a reasonable day-to-day guide.
- Context. If it is hot, or you have trained hard, drink more deliberately — thirst can lag behind losses during and after heavy exercise.
When to be more deliberate
Situations where passively drinking to thirst may not be enough:
- Prolonged or intense exercise, particularly in heat.
- Hot or humid climates, or sudden heat.
- Illness involving fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
- Older age, where the thirst signal can become less reliable.
And the reverse: if you have a condition affecting fluid balance, or have been advised to limit fluids, follow that advice over any general figure. This calculator does not know your medical situation.
The bottom line
Fluid needs vary with activity, climate, diet, and health, none of which a body-weight formula sees — and no validated personal formula exists to capture them.
