Healthy Weight Range Calculator

Find the healthy weight range for your height, based on the WHO's healthy BMI band — with India-specific (Asian) cutoffs applied automatically by region.

Your ResultShowing WHO Global cutoffs

117.8–158.5lb

A healthy weight for your height is roughly 117.8–158.5 lb. That corresponds to a BMI of 18.5–24.9 under the WHO Global range.

Like BMI, this range doesn’t account for muscle mass or build, so athletic bodies may sit above it without excess fat. Use it as a guide, not a target set in stone.

What This Means

Understanding your healthy weight range

Your healthy weight range is the span of weights that puts you in the healthy BMI band for your height. Rather than a single "ideal" number, it's a band — because a range of weights can be perfectly healthy for the same height, depending on your build and muscle mass.

We calculate it straight from the World Health Organization's healthy BMI band. On the standard scale that band is a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9; for the India region we apply the WHO's Asian cutoffs, where the healthy band tops out lower (up to 22.9) because health risk rises at a lower BMI. That's why the same height gives a lower upper limit under the India setting.

Treat the range as a guide, not a finish line. Sitting a little outside it isn't automatically a problem — especially if you're very muscular, in which case a Body Fat % estimate is more informative. And where within the range you feel and perform best is individual.

This range shares BMI's blind spot: it can't tell muscle from fat. If you train seriously with weights, read your position against the range loosely and lean on a body-fat estimate instead.

Accuracy

Who this is most and least accurate for

The healthy weight range is most meaningful for adults of average, moderately active build — the same population the WHO BMI cutoffs were validated against. For most people it's a reasonable, evidence-based target band.

It's least accurate for the same groups where BMI struggles: competitive athletes and heavily muscled individuals (who may sit above it without excess fat), older adults who've lost muscle (who may sit inside it while carrying more fat than ideal), and it isn't intended for children, adolescents, or during pregnancy. In those cases, pair it with a Body Fat % estimate and professional judgement.

Methodology

How this calculator works

Formula. Healthy weight = BMI × height(m)², evaluated at the low and high ends of the healthy BMI band. So for your height we compute 18.5 × height² for the lower bound and 24.9 × height² (or 22.9 × height² for the India region) for the upper bound. Height entered in feet/inches is converted first, and the result is shown in the weight unit that matches your region.

Why two ranges. This is a direct inversion of the same WHO BMI classification the BMI calculator uses — including the WHO Expert Consultation's separate, lower cutoffs for Asian populations. Switching region changes the upper bound, not just the label.

Confidence. We label it high confidence because it derives directly from the population-validated WHO cutoffs. It inherits BMI's one big caveat, though: it can't account for muscle mass or body composition, so use it as a screen and a guide, not a precise personal prescription.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

It's the weight span that corresponds to a healthy BMI at your height: your height in metres squared, multiplied by the low and high ends of the healthy BMI band (18.5 to 24.9 on the standard WHO scale).
The World Health Organization uses a lower healthy-BMI upper limit for Asian populations (up to 22.9 instead of 24.9), because health risk rises at a lower BMI. So the India range has a lower top end for the same height.
No. The range is a healthy band, not a single target. Where you feel and function best within it depends on your build, muscle mass, and overall health — this is a guide, not a goal to hit precisely.
Not necessarily. Like BMI, this range doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so athletic bodies can sit above it without excess fat. A Body Fat % estimate gives a clearer picture in that case.
