How Accurate Are 1RM Estimates?
Good at low reps, unreliable at high ones, and different by exercise. What moves the estimate, and how to use it anyway.

An estimated one-rep max is a genuinely useful training number and a poor competition prediction. The difference is worth understanding before you load a bar based on one.
Accuracy depends mostly on rep count
This is the dominant factor. At low reps the estimate is close to the thing it is predicting; at high reps it is extrapolating a long way from a set that increasingly tests endurance rather than maximal strength.
The Epley and Brzycki formulas make this visible: they agree within a few kilograms up to about 10 reps and then diverge sharply, differing by nearly 14 kg at 15 reps on a 100 kg lift. When two reasonable formulas disagree that much, neither is reliable.
Practical rule: estimate from 3–5 reps where you can.
What else moves it
- Exercise choice. The reps-to-max relationship differs between lifts. Estimates tend to hold better on larger compound movements than on isolation exercises.
- Training history. Lifters accustomed to heavy, low-rep work often express a higher true max relative to their rep performance than those who train mostly in higher rep ranges.
- How close to failure the set was. The formulas assume a set taken to or near failure. A set with reps left in reserve produces an underestimate.
- Fatigue and conditions. A set at the end of a hard session predicts a lower max than the same set fresh.
The middle two are why two lifters with identical 5-rep sets can have genuinely different one-rep maxes.
What "moderate confidence" means here

That is enough precision for programming. A plan calling for sets at 75% of max does not need your max resolved to the kilogram — being within a few percent puts you at a sensible working weight, and you adjust from there by feel.
Getting a better estimate
- Use a recent set. Strength changes; an estimate from three months ago describes a lifter who no longer exists.
- Use a hard set. Near failure, good technique, no grinding reps that compromise form.
- Use a low rep count. Three to five is the sweet spot.
- Estimate per exercise. Do not apply a squat-derived max to your bench.
- Watch the two formulas. A wide gap means re-estimate from fewer reps.
Testing a true max
If you genuinely need the real number, a tested max is the only way to get it — but it is a demanding session with real risk. Warm up thoroughly, build up in sensible jumps, keep technique strict, and use a spotter or safety bars. Do not test a max when tired, and do not test it on a movement you have not trained recently.
For most people most of the time, an estimate from a hard set of five is the better trade: nearly as useful, far less costly.
