How One-Rep Max Is Estimated

Estimate your 1RM from a set you've already done. The Epley formula, a worked example, and why you don't need to test a true max.

Your one-rep max is the heaviest weight you can lift once with good form. Testing it directly is demanding and carries real risk, so most lifters estimate it instead — from a set they have already completed.

The idea

If you can lift 100 kg for five reps, you could clearly lift more than 100 kg for one. How much more follows a fairly predictable relationship, and that relationship is what a 1RM formula encodes.

We use the Epley formula as the primary estimate:

1RM = weight × (1 + reps / 30)

A worked example

For a set of 100 kg × 5 reps:

100 × (1 + 5/30)
= 100 × 1.1667
= 116.7 kg

So the estimated one-rep max is about 117 kg. The Brzycki cross-check gives 112.5 kg for the same set — close, and the gap between them is itself informative.

Why the set you choose matters

The estimate is most accurate from low-to-moderate rep sets. Accuracy declines as reps climb, because a high-rep set is increasingly limited by muscular endurance and fatigue rather than by raw strength — a different quality from the one you are trying to measure.

Our calculator caps reps at 15, and the formulas lose validity beyond about 12. Practically:

  • 1–5 reps — the most reliable range for estimating a max.
  • 6–10 reps — still useful, with widening uncertainty.
  • 11–15 reps — treat with real caution.
  • Above 15 — not a strength test, and the calculator will not accept it.

For the best estimate, use a hard set in the 3–5 rep range taken close to failure with good technique.

Reps to failure, not reps performed

An important detail that quietly ruins many estimates: the formulas assume the set was taken to or near failure. If you did 100 kg for 5 reps but could comfortably have done 8, the calculation treats your submaximal set as a maximal one and understates your max.

Enter a set where those reps were genuinely all you had.

The one-rep edge case

If you enter 1 rep, the answer should obviously be the weight you lifted — you just did a single. Epley's raw formula does not quite do that: it returns 100 × (1 + 1/30), or 103.3 kg, overestimating a max you have already directly demonstrated.

An estimated max is a training tool, not a competition result. It tells you what to load the bar with, not what you can definitely lift.

What to do with the number

Estimated maxes are mainly useful for programming percentages — a training plan calling for sets at 75% of 1RM needs a 1RM to take a percentage of.

Re-estimate periodically from a recent hard set rather than clinging to an old number. And if you do want to test a true max, warm up thoroughly, use good technique, and ideally have a spotter.
