How Steps Convert to Calories

A rough conversion scaled by body weight, why it's only an approximation, and where the 10,000-step target actually came from.

Converting steps to calories is genuinely rough — more so than most fitness calculations — and we would rather say that plainly than dress it up.

The conversion

kcal ≈ steps × 0.0005 × weight(kg)

For 10,000 steps at 70 kg:

10,000 × 0.0005 × 70 = 350 kcal

Body weight is in the formula because moving more mass costs more energy. The same 10,000 steps burns meaningfully more for a heavier person than a lighter one.

Where the figure comes from

This is not a formula from a published paper. It is derived transparently from walking energy costs — roughly 0.04 kcal per step for an adult of about 80 kg, scaled by body weight — using MET values from the Compendium of Physical Activities that also underpin our Calories Burned Calculator.

We are flagging that openly because it matters: this is an approximation built from a cited source, not itself a validated equation. That is why the calculator carries our estimate only rating, the lowest we use.

What it can't see

A step is not a fixed unit of work. Real energy cost varies with:

  • Walking speed. Brisk walking costs considerably more per step than strolling.
  • Stride length. Taller people cover more ground per step, so their steps are not equivalent to a shorter person's.
  • Terrain and gradient. Hills change the cost substantially.
  • Fitness and efficiency. Trained walkers use less energy for the same distance.

The formula sees only step count and body weight. Everything above is invisible to it.

This is a rough comparison tool, not a calorie count. Use it to see whether today was more active than yesterday, not to work out what you have earned.

About the 10,000-step target

Since it comes up constantly: the 10,000-step figure did not originate in research. It is widely reported to have come from a Japanese pedometer marketing campaign in the 1960s, and it stuck because it is memorable and round.

That does not make it a bad target — it is a reasonable amount of daily walking, and more movement is generally good. It just is not a scientifically derived threshold, and there is nothing magic about crossing it. Any consistent increase in daily walking is worthwhile.

Don't add it to your TDEE

The same double-counting trap as calorie burn estimates: if you calculated your TDEE with an activity multiplier, your ordinary daily walking is already included. Adding a steps figure on top counts it twice.

Use this calculator to compare days or to account for something well outside your normal routine, not to inflate a total that already accounts for your usual movement.

The bottom line

Multiply steps by 0.0005 and your weight in kilograms for a rough figure — about 350 kcal for 10,000 steps at 70 kg.
