BMI, Muscle, and Why Athletes Read High
BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so lean, muscular people often read "overweight." Here's when BMI misleads, who it's least accurate for, and what to use instead.

BMI's greatest strength — that it needs only your height and weight — is also its biggest blind spot. Those two numbers can't tell muscle from fat. This guide explains why muscular and athletic people often get a misleadingly high BMI, who else the number tends to misjudge, and which measures give a clearer picture.
The core limitation
BMI is weight divided by height squared. Muscle is denser than fat, so a lean, heavily trained body weighs more than an untrained body of the same height — and BMI reads that extra weight as if it were extra fat. The formula has no way to know the difference.
The practical result: a rugby player, a sprinter, or a serious lifter can land in the overweight or even obese BMI range while carrying very little body fat. The number isn't "wrong" — it's correctly computing a ratio — but it's answering a question about weight, not about fatness or fitness.

Who BMI is least accurate for
BMI is most reliable as a population screen for average, moderately active adults whose build is typical for their height. It's least accurate for people whose body composition sits outside that average:
- Athletes and muscular builds — may read high without excess fat, as described above.
- Older adults — can lose muscle with age and read "normal" while carrying more fat than the number implies (sometimes called "normal-weight obesity").
- Pregnant people — standard BMI cutoffs don't apply; weight gain during pregnancy is assessed differently.
- Children and teenagers — growth requires age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age charts, not the adult formula and adult cutoffs.
If you're in one of these groups, treat BMI as a rough screen at most, and lean on a body-composition measure and a clinician's judgement instead.
What to use instead (or alongside)
The fix isn't to abandon BMI — it's to add a measure that sees what BMI can't:

A worked intuition
Imagine two people, both 175 cm and 82 kg — an identical BMI of about 26.8, which reads "overweight." One is a recreational lifter with visible muscle definition; the other is sedentary. Same BMI, very different bodies. A body-fat estimate would likely place the lifter well below the sedentary person, and a waist measurement would probably tell the same story. The BMI didn't lie — it just couldn't distinguish them.
The bottom line
BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so it overstates risk for athletic, muscular builds and can understate it for people who've lost muscle. It's a solid population screen, not a body-composition measurement.
