What Is a Healthy BMI?
The WHO BMI categories — underweight, normal, overweight, and obese — what each range means, and why a "healthy" BMI is a starting point, not a finish line.

Once you have a BMI number, the obvious next question is: is it healthy? This guide explains the standard World Health Organization categories, what each range is meant to signal, and why the honest answer to "what's a healthy BMI" is a little more nuanced than a single cutoff.
The standard WHO categories
For most adults, BMI is read against the standard WHO classification:

The 18.5 – 24.9 band is what's usually meant by a "healthy" or "normal" BMI. These cutoffs come from population studies linking BMI ranges to health outcomes across large groups — they describe where risk statistically tends to be lowest, not a guarantee about any one person.

What each range is signalling
- Underweight (below 18.5). May indicate undernutrition or an underlying condition, and can carry its own health risks. It's worth a conversation with a clinician rather than an assumption that "lighter is always better."
- Normal (18.5 – 24.9). The range where population-level risk tends to be lowest. It's a reassuring screen, not a clean bill of health — body composition and other factors still matter.
- Overweight (25.0 – 29.9). A signal that weight may be worth a closer look, especially alongside other measures like waist size or blood markers.
- Obese (30.0 and above). Associated with higher risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at a population level. It's a prompt for professional guidance, not a diagnosis in itself.
Notice the language throughout: may indicate, associated with, worth a closer look. BMI is a screening estimate. It flags when a closer look is sensible; it doesn't diagnose anything on its own.
Why "healthy" isn't a single number
Two people with the same BMI can have very different bodies. BMI uses only height and weight, so it can't tell muscle from fat or see where weight is carried. That means:
- A muscular, athletic person can read "overweight" while carrying little excess fat. (More on this in BMI, muscle, and why athletes read high.)
- An older adult who has lost muscle can read "normal" while carrying more fat than the number suggests.
- Where fat sits matters too — weight carried around the abdomen is more strongly linked to metabolic risk than the same weight elsewhere.

Population matters, too
The standard table above isn't the only one. The WHO also publishes lower cutoffs for Asian-ancestry populations, who tend to face increased health risk at lower BMI values. Under those cutoffs, "overweight" begins at 23.0 rather than 25.0 — so the same BMI can read "normal" on one scale and "overweight" on the other. The bottom line
A BMI of 18.5 – 24.9 is the standard "normal" range, with overweight from 25 and obese from 30. But because BMI can't see body composition or fat distribution, treat your category as a starting point. Pair it with a waist or body-fat check, consider which cutoffs fit your population, and bring anything that matters to a healthcare provider who can see the full picture.
