BMR vs TDEE — What's the Difference?

BMR is what you burn at rest; TDEE is what you burn in total. Which one to plan meals around, and why confusing them causes problems.

BMR and TDEE are closely related and frequently confused, and the confusion has real consequences — mistaking one for the other is a reliable way to end up eating far too little.

The relationship in one line

TDEE = BMR × activity multiplier

BMR is what your body burns at complete rest. TDEE is what you burn in total across a real day, including walking, working, training, and digesting. TDEE is always the larger number — for a sedentary person it is BMR multiplied by 1.2, and for someone very active it can approach twice their BMR.

A worked comparison

For a 30-year-old man, 170 cm, 68 kg:

Even at the sedentary multiplier, TDEE exceeds BMR by more than 300 kcal. At the active end the gap is over 1,100.

Why the confusion matters

Here is the failure mode. Someone calculates their BMR, sees a number that looks like a plausible daily calorie target, and eats at it — while also going to work, walking around, and training.

They are now eating at their resting requirement while living an active life, which is a substantially larger deficit than they intended. That tends to be difficult to sustain, and it is a deficit chosen by accident rather than on purpose.

BMR is a component of your energy budget, not a meal-planning target. If you are eating at a number, that number should almost always be derived from TDEE.

Which to use when

Use TDEE for anything involving how much to eat — maintenance, a deficit, a surplus. It is the number that reflects your actual life. Using TDEE to lose or gain weight covers turning it into a target.

Use BMR for understanding rather than planning: seeing how much of your burn is fixed, how it changes with age and body size, and as the input that TDEE is built from.

The multiplier is the uncertain part

Both numbers share the same estimated BMR, so they inherit the same ±10–15% individual variation. TDEE then adds a second, larger source of error: the activity multiplier is a broad category you select rather than anything measured.

That makes the activity choice the most consequential input in the whole chain — as choosing your activity level honestly shows, it can move the result by over 1,100 kcal for the same person. If your real-world results disagree with your target, adjust that multiplier before anything else.

The bottom line

BMR is rest; TDEE is real life. TDEE is BMR times an activity factor and is always the bigger number. Plan your eating around TDEE, and treat BMR as the foundation it is built on rather than a target in its own right.
