What Is BMR, and Why Does It Matter?
Your BMR is the energy your body burns at complete rest. What it includes, how it's estimated, and what it's actually useful for.

Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the energy your body uses doing nothing at all — lying still, fully rested, not digesting a meal. It is the floor beneath every other number in your energy budget, and for most people it is the largest single component of what they burn in a day.
What BMR actually covers
At complete rest your body is still working hard. BMR is the energy cost of:
- Breathing and circulation
- Maintaining body temperature
- Brain and nervous system activity
- Kidney, liver, and other organ function
- Cell repair and replacement
None of that is optional, and none of it stops. This is why BMR typically accounts for the majority of daily energy expenditure for someone who is not especially active — the largest part of your calorie burn happens while you are doing nothing in particular.
How it is estimated
We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1990:
Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161
For a 30-year-old man weighing 68 kg at 170 cm tall:
(10 × 68) + (6.25 × 170) − (5 × 30) + 5
= 680 + 1062.5 − 150 + 5
= 1,598 kcal/day

What the inputs tell you
The equation's structure is informative in itself:
- Weight carries the largest coefficient. More body mass means more tissue to maintain.
- Height contributes positively — taller bodies have more surface area and tissue.
- Age subtracts. BMR tends to decline with age, largely tracking the loss of lean mass rather than age itself.
- Sex shifts the constant, reflecting average differences in body composition.
That last point explains a common frustration: a woman and a man of identical height, weight, and age will get different estimates, because on average they differ in lean mass — and lean mass is what actually drives resting metabolism.
What BMR is useful for
BMR on its own is rarely the number you act on. Its value is as a starting point:
- It is the base for calculating your total daily burn — see the TDEE Calculator.
- It gives context for how much of your energy expenditure is fixed rather than earned through activity.
- It provides a reference for understanding why energy needs change with age and body size.
How much to trust it
The estimate is well validated for the general population, but individual metabolism varies by roughly ±10–15% for reasons the equation cannot see — body composition above all, plus genetics, hormones, and health status. Two people matching on every input can genuinely differ.
