Why BMR Estimates Vary Between People
Two people with identical height, weight, age and sex can have genuinely different resting metabolisms. What the equation can't see.

A BMR equation takes four inputs and returns a precise-looking number. Real resting metabolism varies by roughly ±10–15% between people who match on all four. Understanding why makes the estimate more useful, not less.
Lean mass is the real driver
The single biggest factor is body composition. Muscle, organs, and other lean tissue are metabolically active — they consume energy continuously. Fat tissue consumes considerably less.
The equation doesn't know your body composition. It infers metabolic demand from total weight, height, age, and sex, all of which correlate with lean mass across a population without determining it for any individual. Two people at the same weight, one carrying substantially more muscle, have genuinely different resting metabolisms — and identical BMR estimates.

What else moves it
Beyond composition, several factors contribute to individual variation:
- Genetics. Baseline metabolic rate has a heritable component that no equation can capture.
- Hormonal status. Thyroid function in particular has a substantial influence on resting metabolism.
- Age, beyond the equation's adjustment. The formula subtracts a fixed amount per year, which approximates an average decline that is really driven by changing body composition — so it fits some people better than others.
- Health status and medication. Illness, recovery, and various medications can shift resting energy expenditure.
Note the pattern: most of these are things the equation structurally cannot see, not things it gets wrong. It is doing well to land within 10–15% given four inputs.
What this means in practice
For a BMR estimate of 1,598 kcal, a ±10–15% band spans roughly 1,360 to 1,840 kcal. That is wide enough to matter and narrow enough to be useful — which is exactly what a moderate confidence rating is meant to convey.
The practical implication is that you should not treat small differences as meaningful. If two calculators give you 1,590 and 1,610, they are telling you the same thing. And chasing precision to the calorie is chasing something the underlying estimate cannot deliver.
How to find your real number
You cannot resolve this with a better formula, but you can resolve it with evidence:

- Eat at that target consistently for two to three weeks.
- Track a weekly average weight, not daily readings.
- If your weight moves when it should be stable, your true expenditure differs from the estimate — adjust and repeat.
Three weeks of real data beats any equation, because it measures you rather than predicting a population.
