Steps to Calories Calculator

Estimate the calories you burned from your step count and body weight — a rough figure, useful for comparing days and tracking trends.

Your Result

350kcal

Those steps burned roughly 350 kcal, scaled to your body weight.

This is a rough estimate — real burn depends a lot on your walking speed, stride, terrain, and fitness. It’s best for comparing days and tracking trends, not for exact calorie counting.

What This Means

Understanding steps and calories

Counting steps is one of the simplest ways to track daily movement, and turning them into a calorie figure makes the effort feel concrete. The two things that matter most are how many steps you take and how much you weigh — a heavier body uses more energy to cover the same ground.

What a step counter can't see is your speed, stride, and terrain, all of which change the energy cost. Walking briskly uphill burns far more per step than a slow stroll on the flat, so any steps-to-calories figure is inherently approximate.

Use this number to compare your own days and spot trends — "today was more active than yesterday" — rather than as a precise calorie total to eat back. For a fuller picture of daily energy use, the TDEE calculator already bundles general activity in.

If you use an active TDEE setting, it already accounts for a lot of walking. Adding a big step-calorie total on top risks counting the same movement twice.

Methodology

How this calculator works

Estimate. We multiply your step count by about 0.0005 times your body weight in kilograms. That works out to roughly 0.04 calories per step for an average adult, scaled up or down by weight.

Basis. The figure is derived transparently from walking energy cost (walking MET values in the Compendium of Physical Activities) and a typical walking cadence — it's an approximation, not a precisely validated equation.

Confidence. We label this estimate-only. Real burn depends heavily on speed, stride, and terrain, so treat the result as a ballpark for comparison rather than an exact count.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

For a roughly 70 kg adult it's about 350 calories, but the real figure varies with your weight, walking speed, and stride. Heavier people and faster walking burn more.
It's a rough estimate. Step counters don't know your speed or terrain, and energy cost per step varies, so use it to compare your own days rather than as an exact calorie total.
If you also use TDEE, be aware that an active TDEE setting already includes a lot of walking — don't add a big step burn on top and count it twice.
